This year’s MAPA Conference was one for the books. With over 350 guests in attendance and a packed exhibit hall, the 2017 MAPA Conference was filled with education, laughter, and fun. Casino Night kicked off the conference Monday evening as many gathered to try their hand at blackjack. To top the night, we had the exciting, to say the least, NCAA College Football Championship game on display.

Everything was on display this year in the exhibit hall as equipment companies brought in MTV’s, pavers, compactors, trailers, and much more. To go with the equipment many other exhibitors displayed their products and services for the guests in attendance. One display grabbed some attention and that was Kenny Wallace’s car.

Kenny was our keynote speaker this year and delivered an awesome message along with his famous “Jake Break” impression! His energy was on display as he spoke of his story of success in the racing world including the many friendships he made along the way. Kenny’s message was heard round the room as he talked of teamwork and continuing to move forward, working towards your goal.

Following Kenny was a group of speakers that gave us updates on the industry, including state and federal outlooks. First to speak was Jeff Glenn with Mercury Alliance followed by Patrick McKenna, MoDOT Director, with an update on MoDOT. We then moved into the Expo for lunch and the MAPA Quality Paving and Construction Awards, Scholarships Awards, and Hall of Fame Awards.

The General and Local Agency track began after the conclusion of the awards ceremony. Tuesday afternoon was filled with presentations on the industry from Jerry Vantrease (Heatec) with Saving Energy at an Asphalt Plant, Dan Staebell (APA) with an APA Update, and Jerry Farnham (Delta Companies) talking about Drone Technology.

We also had a Local Agency track this year that included material testing, pavement management, and a case study. These presentations were given by Chris Yarnell with ES&S, Dan Oesch with MoDOT, Scott Smith with Lochmeuller Group and Dan Haid with Boone County.

Finishing the day, we gathered for dinner and moved right into the MAPA-REF Raffle and PAC Auction. With the famous auctioneers at the mic the bidding began. This year we raised over $12,000.

Wednesday began with an update on NCAT from Buzz Powell followed by Ashley Batson, South Carolina Asphalt Pavement Association, with a presentation on Workforce Development Challenges and Solutions. Dr. Bill Buttlar gave us an update on Mizzou University and the Mizzou Asphalt Pavement Innovation Lab (MAPIL). Those in attendance were also invited to a tour of the campus facility following the conference. Wrapping the conference up was Richard Schreck, Virginia Asphalt Association, speaking on Saving Failing Concrete Pavements with SMA and Dan Oesch, MoDOT, with a MoDOT Field office update.

Thank you to everyone that attended the 2017 MAPA Conference. We are very lucky to have such a great industry community that comes together for this event every year.
