Asphalt Pavement 101: Tack Coats, Bond Strengths and Pavement Performance On-Demand Webinar

Topic Description:

Tack coats are used to bond pavement layers together, and if the proper materials are used, handled and applied correctly, they will provide an excellent bond between layers, which will lead to good long-term performance of the pavement. The importance of properly bonded pavement layers cannot be overstated, and a thorough understanding of tacking materials and operations is key to a successful paving project.

This webinar will focus on the basics of tack coats, including:

  • Why tack coats are important;
  • Types of materials that are commonly used for tack, including emulsified asphalts, hot applied tack materials, and reduced tracking materials;
  • Typical construction practices for tacking, such as application rates, temperatures, and surface cleanliness;
  • Tack tracking – causes and solutions;
  • Testing and acceptance of tack coats; and
  • Bond strength testing

Key Takeaways:

  • Information on the basic materials used for tacking, including asphalt emulsions, reduced tracking tack coats, and hot applied materials.
  • Good construction practices with respect to tacking operations
  • Information on the basic causes of tracking and the best methods of addressing these problems.
  • Knowledge of basic bond strength testing

Presenter:

Jim Musselman, P.E., National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT)

PLEASE NOTE:

The ASPHALT CALCULATOR is a quick and easy tool to help you estimate how many tons of asphalt pavement your project will need. Just enter your project’s width (feet), length (feet), and planned nominal compacted thickness (inches), then click “CALCULATE.”

The calculator uses a mix density of 1.950 tons per cubic yard to estimate the total asphalt tonnage required.
